About me
Donald W. Sorah is a Professor of Music at The University of Virginia’s College at Wise, an Apple Distinguished Educator, Apple Learning Coach, and ISTE Certified Educator. He is the recipient of the SCHEV Outstanding Faculty Award and a two-time Outstanding Use of Technology in the Classroom Award winner, recognizing his sustained commitment to innovative, student-centered teaching.
With over 25 years of experience in education, Donald is known for integrating technology in ways that prioritize creativity, curiosity, and student agency rather than compliance-driven instruction. His teaching centers on authentic assessment and alternative grading, with students demonstrating learning through music composition, podcasting, video production, and collaborative textbook authorship.
His students’ work is published on platforms such as Apple Music and Apple Books and serves as learning resources for future classes. A frequent conference presenter and workshop leader, Donald shares practical, classroom-tested strategies for iPad integration, open educational resources, and creative assessment design. His work is grounded in equity, access, and the belief that students learn best when they are empowered to create rather than consume.
